Ken Rice

Ken’s Doctor told Ken’s wife Arlene and I that Ken knows that he is not going to survive his latest complications. Yesterday he recognized Arlene, today he did not. The nurses said it is just a matter of time before Ken passes away. Arlene just told me that if Ken passes away, the funeral mass won’t be until after Labor Day.

Please keep Ken and Arlene in your prayers.

FEDERAL COLA Watch

In mid-August, the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced the July 2006 monthly Consumer Price Index (CPI), which is used to calculate the annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for military retired pay, VA disability compensation, and Social Security.

The CPI continued its upward trend, rising another 0.3% in July -- for a cumulative increase of 3.4% so far this fiscal year. Once again, a large share of the increase was due to a jump in energy prices.

Last year, the CPI had risen 3.2% through the month of July and ended up the year at 4.1%. With inflation running slightly ahead of last year's pace so far, it would seem likely that we’ll end this year in the same ballpark. We can still hope that inflation in the last two months of this year may not match last year's experience, when Hurricane Katrina sent energy prices soaring.

Alan Berkowitz Kidney Transplant

Dear Brothers and Sisters and Friends:

Tonight I received a phone call from my Transplant Team informing me that a kidney has become available. Tomorrow morning I will take blood test to make sure I am a perfect match for the transplant. If it's a match, I will have the surgery at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami late in the afternoon. Now is the time to keep me and my family in your prayers.

Ken Rice

I went to see Ken Sunday night and I thought that he was doing much better than the last time I saw him. He is not able to stand, but he goes to therapy every morning. Ken has to be lifted out of the bed by a special machine. He still has his good sense of humor and he can remember everything.

On my way out of Ken’s room I met the Sanchez’s and we went back into his room. Ken let us borrow his 8x10 NYCPD photograph, in full dress uniform, taken in 1950 at his retirement ceremony. We had it on display at last night’s meeting.

Ken would like to hear from you and you can reach him at 386-228-1005.

Medicare Re-Imbursement Checks

Some Medicare Re-Imbursement checks were mailed out yesterday.

More were mailed out today and the rest will be mailed out tomorrow.

VA Preventing Drug Errors

The Department of Veterans Affairs remains a world leader in patient safety and the use of technology in preventing errors associated with prescription drugs.

All VA medical centers utilize a bar-coded wrist band system to make sure the right patient gets the right medication in the right dose at the right time. This system is integrated with VA's electronic health records, and the results are stunning. VA prescribes medication to patients with an accuracy rate of 99.993%, a standard that simply does not exist anywhere else in American health care. And we maintained this standard of excellence while filling 231 million prescriptions in 2005.

National Mega Prize Drawing

We had two winners in the National Mega Prize Drawing. They were the smaller prizes.

A Verrazano 10-13 member had the Grand Prize winner, which means that the Verranzo Club will receive $1,000 for selling the winning ticket.

Last year the Jersey Shore 10-13 had the Grand Prize Winner and that member passed away recently from cancer. The club donated their winning share to the sick member.

NE-10-13 received a rebate check for $280.00 for the tickets we sold.
