Wal-Mart Stores, reacting to what it described as a "considerable response" to a test program in Tampa in which it offers nearly 300 generic prescription drugs for dramatically reduced rates, announced today that it will expand the program statewide
starting TODAY.The world's biggest retailer, during a press conference in Orlando, also said it was expanding the list of generic drugs it will sell for $4 per prescriptions from 291 to
314. The program will also include as many as 143 drug compounds as well as other drugs such as the oncology medicine megestrol and the cholesterol drug lovastatin.
Wal-Mart, which started testing the sales program in Tampa last month, hadn't planned to expand it statewide until January. But it said today it had changed its mind based on public comment and the urging of Gov. Jeb Bush.
As of Friday, the $4 prescriptions will be available at
235 Wal-Mart, Neighborhood Market and Sam's Club pharmacies across Florida. The drugs covered include common medicines used to treat conditions such as allergies, cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes.
